movies and stuff

The kids and I spent the day at home today. We pretty much just hung out. We watched a lot of Dora the Explorer videos and the daily episodes. Zach has been having lots of fun in his mega-saucer downstairs. Olivia will go from toy to toy on it and spin the different baubles and get him to laugh. I played Pac-Man and got my highest score, over 44,000. I kinda wish that my version would follow the ghost scripts of way back so it would be easier to rack up points but this way is more challenging. So it goes.

We watched Meet the Folkers the other day. You'd think Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman, "Wow, this should be good!" No. It was terrible. I mean it was painful to watch.

Weekend with the Kids

Elena worked this weekend and I was home with the kids. They were really good and we had lots of fun. We watched Dora the Explorer videos. Over and over. We read a lot of books and took naps. It's amazing how good a mood they can be in if they get good naps. I keep trying to explain this to Olivia but even though we had a good time she is nowhere near convinced. She curled up in front of the computer and fell asleep on my chair today.
Zach hasn't been feeling so well recently so he's been on medication that has helped a lot with his mood. He really likes to sit up. He needs to be held and all but he likes it a lot. And by sit up I mean he needs to be at a 90 degree angle straight up. Leaning back even a bit could lead to being comfortable and that could lead to sleep.

We watched Constantine last night and today. It starred Ted Theodore Logan as Keanu Reeves as John Constantine a person with holy powers to fight off demons. There was a lost book in the bible that explains what the evil is trying to do and then the story is how the good guys deal with it. I liked it, not loved it but it was a good rental. It reminded me much of The Prophecy with the awesome Christopher Walken.

I'm watching the Cards against the Cubbies right now. Some quotes from the announcers. After 3 homers in the first, "The Cards are playing home run derby against the Cubs ace, Mark Prior." After a double, "Man, they're taking batting practice against Prior." Sweeeeet.

Stuff

The kids and I were playing downstairs yesterday. I put Zach on his stomach and he was laughing and having a time and Olivia was jumping around when all of a sudden Zach kindof tipped and flipped himself over. I couldn't believe it so I flipped him back on his stomach. He laughed a bit then flipped back over. Olivia and I clapped vigorously for him. He was so proud.

We watched Hotel Rwanda the other night. I liked it. Don Cheadle starred. That guy can do just about anything. He's one of my favorite actors.
We also watched a couple of forgettable movies The Day After Tomorrow about global warming and a lot of snow and Heavenly Creatures which I don't really remember. Elena tells me I fell asleep through it. What I do remember just kinda blurs together.

Weekend Adventures

One of our daycare providers, Chris, is an avid poker player and has been after me to join them in their game. They usually play the kind that is on TV a lot recently called No-Limit Texas Hold'em. I've never played really outside a few hands with Elena so I was prepared to just go and lose my money.
I called Chris about meeting and he said to come to his house around 7:30. I got there and met up with him and two of his friends. We drove to another guys house to play. They asked me if I had ever played before and I said that I've seen it on TV and their eyes lighted up. But for a $10 buy in I wasn't going to lose much.
They handed out lots of colored chips and we started playing. It took me a while to figure out how the turns went around the table because it isn't necessarily the person to the left of the dealer who starts. Plus the forced bets were a bit odd for me.
I think it's called beginner's luck because I smacked the five other guys around and won the first tournament. Some of my hole cards were a pair of aces that took one guy out. A pair of kings took two other guys out and then I outdrew the last guy to win.
The second tournament we played I stayed back a bit and let some other guys take each other out then was able to take it to two players when I flopped a straight. I had a big chip lead and was punishing the remaining guy but heads up anything can happen and it did. He doubled up a few times on me on 50/50 hands and then he was way out front. I went all in with a pair of twos and he took me out when the flop paired him up with eights. I was bummed about that loss because I was way out front but that's poker.
The third tournament I lasted three hands when I tried to bluff Chris, the chip leader, into folding a big pot but he stayed in and took my money. Doh.
So -$10 to enter, +$60 to win, -$10 2nd tournie, -$10 third tournie sends me home +$30. It was a lot of fun. Time to go on tour on the World Series of Poker with $10k buy-ins.

I had a store credit bonus that I spent a good amount on a pressure washer. It is an electric one so not very powerful but all we want it for is to wash off the deck or the car. I tried it out and it worked ok but nothing special. I was a bit disappointed in it but I'll try it out again. Maybe my expectations were a bit high.
It is still fun to use though.

Olivia and I had fun this morning opening up a coconut. I used a cordless drill to make holes to get the milk out. I poured it into two glasses for each of us. She gamely tried a sip but that was it. To crack it I drug out my vice and crushed it until it cracked into a bunch of pieces. I knifed off some for the girl and she chewed on it but then spit it out. I carved away at the meat and put it in a bowl. Then Olivia would sneak her hand in there and fish out a sliver. She would then gnaw at it for a while and spit it out. Goofy girl. I ate my fill of it and had to toss the rest.

Travis and Michelle invited us to their Forest's b-day party tonight. We also met their new daughter Amara from Ethiopia. They spent two weeks over there getting to know her and all. She is 21 months old and likes to smile. At their house they had a couple of small pools out for the kids to play in. They had what looked like a long air-mattress that sprayed small streams of water on itself with a shallow pool on one end. I had fun tossing the kids through it.

Olivia likes to point at things she knows and verbalize them sometimes quite loudly. She recently learned what a truck was but unfortunately pronounces it with an "f".

A letter from Malaysia

I come home from work today and find the house empty. Elena and the kids are out driving I surmise. I check the mail and I find a Manila envelope addressed to me with no return address with stamps from Malaysia. The first thing that comes to mind is that some terrorist is trying to poison me with anthrax. Then I think that is someone is going to the trouble of using anthrax they'd probably look for a higher profile target than myself. I still don't open it.

Elena and the kids come home and I show her the letter. I tell her what I was thinking and she promptly opens it. OK then. It was a Shrek DVD that she'd ordered off of Ebay.

Zach has been working on his rolling skills. He's almost there. He can grab onto things a lot better with more coordination. He smiles and laughs a lot.

We've been watching Dora the Explorer quite a bit recently. Elena picked up a couple of DVD's of her and Olivia just loves it. She almost overstimulates herself screaming "Dora! Dora! Dora!" or "Boots! Boots! Boots!" When Swiper comes on Olivia will say, "Oh Man!"

We watched a couple of movies. Spanglish with Adam Sandler. It was about a famous chef, Sandler, married to a nutcase, Tea Leone, and their Hispanic non-English speaking maid, Paz Vega. I thought that it would be a comedy but it wasn't. I still liked it.

The other movie was Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. I liked it a lot. Just hilarious. Rip Torn played a coach. "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."

last weekend

Yesterday we spent a lazy afternoon watching the Cards win against the Rockies in the 9th with a single with a guy on second. So that was exciting.

We went swimming on Saturday. Olivia had a great time with that. The pool was cold and I didn't appreciate that but that's ok. There was a hot tub that we went in for a while. The little girl thought that was the neatest thing. Just like bubble baths at home.

Zach has been his goofy self. He sits like a little Buddha and smiles and giggles at people. He still likes to stand up with someone holding him.

Today I worked from noon til six and came home for some grilled burgers that were yummy.

Gables in Decorah

Strawberries? What strawberries?

Cooking on the disco

Playing with the worms

written by Elena

So we're all down to Decorah this weekend so the Greats can meet Zach and play with Livi. It's been a fun weekend so far with lots of catching up and chatting along. Got a few big things planned for today...

A funny thing happened last night. Livi ate a ton of fruit before supper, and so at supper only ate bites of food. So she got out of her chair and played for a bit while the rest of us ate supper and chatted. Then Livi suddenly shouted over at us from the front door "Bye!" We looked over and she was standing naked (except for diaper) and wearing Scott's tennis shoes! So she was saying "Bye!" and then she dramatically blew us all a kiss and started toward the door. Then Scott started to move to get up and she turned toward him and looked up at him with her deep blue innocent eyes and said "money..." It was a riot and I don't know where she picks this stuff up, but it is so entertaining, and boy she just thrives in all the attention and laughter she gets from us all!!! Well, more later!
